In the 2011-12 parliamentary election the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and the Salafist Nour party together won about two-thirds of the seats. The Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi was then elected president and took office on June 30, 2012. Morsi was ousted a year later, but the forecast that Islamists would lead or strongly shape the government came true.
